Author Talk: A Perspective on Chinese Footbinding
Women in Publishing Society Hong Kong
invites you to a Jungian perspective
on the Chinese tradition of footbinding
with
Jungian analyst/WiPS member
Dr Shirley See Yan Ma
In a fascinating talk drawing on personal history, popular myth, literature and therapeutic work with clients, Dr Ma discusses footbinding as a practice and symbol. She explores footbinding as a metaphor for the suffering of women and repression of the feminine; but examines, too, how it can represent a symbol for hope, creativity and spiritual transformation.
Whether you are an educator, academic, writer, artist or working in the health care sector, Dr Ma offers a new perspective that will make you discover how modern women still symbolically find their feet bound through this ancient practice; and how these psychological bindings can be loosened.
Shirley See Yan Ma is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Hong Kong and Toronto, Canada. She teaches Analytical Psychology in various cities in Asia, North America and in Zurich, Switzerland. She is an Honorary Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Hong Kong and the founder/director of the Jung Centre in Hong Kong.
